Doctor Wallace says:
Ted had been mildly nearsighted for much of his adult life, but was used to having extremely clear vision with correction by eyeglasses. He started to develop mild cataracts which interfered with reading and driving comfort, so his optometrist referred Ted to our office. We agreed that mild cataracts were present, and reviewed all available options.
Modern cataract removal and lens implant treatment can eliminate pre-existing prescriptive errors including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Standard types of lens implants are “monofocal” — they only correct for good focus at one distance. Newer lens implant styles are available that have multifocal and/or adjustable-focus properties, but these do accomplish their near clarity at the expense of some (mild) distance sharpness.
Because Ted’s goal was to maximize his distance vision without any clarity loss, we decided that his best option would be monofocal lens implants. He had care for his right eye in September of ’05, and a month later had the left eye treated. He is very pleased with the results of care and doesn’t mind wearing reading glasses for close work.
There are many options available in the lens implant arena, and we endeavor to review all options with each patient so that we can make our recommendations tailored to each person’s visual needs, lifestyle, and desire for overall visual function.
