Doctor Wallace says:
David is in the US Navy, and came to me interested in LASIK. We determined that he would be an excellent candidate for vision correction. I explained that the Navy would disqualify him from active duty if it were discovered that he had received LASIK. The Navy does permit service personnel to have PRK and retain active duty status.
David appreciated that I was knowledgeable about, and could point him to the relevant web pages clarifying the Navy policy on laser refractive surgery. For him, it was no big deal to have PRK instead of LASIK. He did have his care in June of ’02.
I authorized his return to duty 6 weeks after treatment. By then, he was ecstatic, not only with his vision ‘topside,’ but also with his profoundly improved vision underwater. Since he specializes in undersea reconnaissance, search & rescue, and other activities he preferred not to discuss with me, we both agreed that this (his improved vision) was a very good thing indeed.
