CXL for Keratoconus

Understanding Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that causes the cornea—the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye—to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape. This irregular shape leads to distorted vision, increased sensitivity to light, and frequent changes in prescription glasses or contact lenses. Left untreated, keratoconus can severely impair vision and may eventually require a corneal transplant.

CXL Treatment

Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) is a revolutionary, minimally invasive treatment designed to halt the progression of keratoconus. By strengthening the corneal structure, CXL helps maintain the eye’s shape and improves overall vision stability.

How CXL is Performed?

CXL involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to the cornea, followed by exposure to a controlled ultraviolet (UV) light. This combination triggers a natural chemical reaction that strengthens the collagen fibers within the cornea. The entire procedure takes about an hour and is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort.

There are two primary types of CXL:

  • Epithelium-Off (Epi-Off) CXL: The outermost layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed to allow better absorption of the riboflavin drops.
  • Epithelium-On (Epi-On) CXL: The epithelium remains intact, resulting in a quicker recovery time and less discomfort, though it may be less effective for advanced cases.

How Does CXL Work?

  • Halts Disease Progression: CXL is the only FDA-approved treatment proven to stop keratoconus from worsening.
  • Preserves Vision: By stabilizing the cornea, CXL helps maintain current vision levels and reduces the likelihood of needing more invasive procedures, like corneal transplants.
  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure is quick, with minimal downtime, allowing most patients to resume normal activities within a few days.
